Tethered caps

design-ohne-titel

Tethered caps are made of plastic and remain permanently attached to the container after opening, reducing plastic waste. As a leading manufacturer of slitting and folding machines, we have developed our technologies specifically so that these caps can be precisely processed.

Our solutions make it easy to retrofit existing machines and offer maximum flexibility when switching between traditional closures and tethered caps – simply and efficiently.

Slitting technologies

The smarTether technology and CapCompass technology can be combined.

experTether - Complex slitting patterns

The experTether technology enables the precise slitting of closures with complex slitting patterns. The mandrels guiding the closure to the knife are fitted with the knife’s negative slitting pattern, serving as a perfectly matched counterpart. During slitting, the mandrel and knife interlock synchronously to ensure maximum slitting precision. At the same time, the closure rotates around its own axis to create a 360° slit. This process produces both the hinge and the horizontal slit for the tamper-evident band.

Benefits:

  • Durable – there’s no wearing parts on the internal tools

  • Low maintenance – meaning more machine uptime

  • Reduced knife wear – consistently high slitting quality

Compatible with the following machines: TEM, MSM, SDL

smarTether - Simple slitting patterns

The smarTether slitting process is similar to the experTether technology but has one key difference: here, the mandrel is either fitted with a plastic ring or a recess is used instead of the knife’s negative slitting pattern. This technology offers particular advantages when processing simple closure designs and allows for an easy retrofit of existing machines.

Benefits:

  • Simple conversion from traditional closures to tethered caps

  • Flexible slitting geometries without replacing the mandrel

  • Low risk of knife damage

CapCompass - Oriented slitting

CapCompass technology allows the hinge of the tethered cap to be slit at exactly the right position. This level of precision is particularly important when it makes a difference which direction the cap is opened. CapCompass ensures that the closure always points in the desired direction when it is first opened, so as not to get in the way of the product's use.

Ideal for complex packaging designs such as cardboard packaging or containers with special shapes, this technology ensures precise positioning of the slitting lines – both in terms of how it works and how it looks. This not only improves the experience for the user, but also opens up new design possibilities.

Folding technology

Many manufacturers of plastic closures produced by injection molding with slider technology also use a folding machine. Folding gives the closure a conical shape, making it easier to attach to the container after filling. When opened, the TE band (tamper-evident band) remains securely attached to the bottle neck and acts as a locking mechanism on the retaining ring. This enhances performance and increases product safety for end consumers. Compared to conventional plastic closures, however, the asymmetrical tethered cap presents greater challenges during folding.

These closures are less stable and must be folded with greater care. The hinge in particular can be challenging, as it often requires combining several vertical and/or diagonal slitting lines. We have optimized our folding tools to meet these demands, enabling even complex, asymmetrical closures with multiple separation lines to be folded reliably and precisely.

Why tethered caps?

With the EU regulation on tethered caps coming into effect in July 2024, plastic closures on single-use plastic containers holding up to three liters of liquid must be firmly attached to the container. This change offers two key benefits for companies that also or exclusively sell their products in other markets:

  • Economic efficiency

Standardizing closure solutions for multiple markets leads to cost savings.

  • Sustainability

Companies that use tethered caps help reduce plastic waste and position themselves as environmentally responsible businesses.
